ANNOTATIONS

My starting point for the Hybrid Publication project, began by thoroughly reading through both stories in order to become acquainted with their context and storylines.

Once I had read both text through once, I began to identify a common theme of Hierarchy and Class present within both stories. I decided for it to be important to give the stories a second read, highlighting in two different colours (pink= hierarchy and yellow=class), words or phrases which linked to such themes. Through this process, I began to realize that they way in which some planets in 'Invisible Planets' were described could be linked to one of the three spaces within 'Folding Beijing'. Such links were made based on words or phrases relating to my chosen themes.

Leading to a range of possibilities to design a new reading experience of both texts, reflecting upon my chosen themes.

VISUAL INTERPRETATIONS

The first interpretation, stems from the concept of the unfairness executed within 'Folding Beijing' by means of hierarchy and class structures implemented by society. The choice of colour precedes from the dark/gloomy environment portrayed in the story, mainly that of the Third Space. The images symbolize certain aspects within the story, such as inequality and hierarchical dominance.

The second interpretation, is a representation of my initial perception of the story of 'Invisible Planets'. Similarly, I sensed that all planets sustained an optimistic, fairytale-like representation to everyday notions. The images presented on the left, illustrate such interpretation as well as a bright, bold colour scheme. To begin with, I slightly struggled with finding a strong perception of the story, thus leading to the fact that I was not able to extract a meaningful concept as I did for 'Folding Beijing'.
